UNDP and GSMA Join Forces to Boost African-Led AI Development and Language Solutions

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSMA have announced a significant partnership aimed at strengthening Africa's artificial intelligence ecosystem. This collaboration seeks to accelerate the creation and deployment of AI solutions that are specifically tailored to African needs, with a particular focus on integrating African languages into AI systems. The initiative leverages the GSMA's extensive mobile industry expertise and networks alongside UNDP's established development programs and innovation platforms.
Key to this partnership is the support for African-led AI innovation, connecting local talent with opportunities to develop and implement solutions that address the continent's priorities. This includes improving access to crucial compute infrastructure for priority AI pilot projects through UNDP's timbuktoo initiative. The goal is to ensure that more people and businesses across Africa can benefit from the ongoing digital transformation, overcoming language and content barriers.
The collaboration also aligns with the GSMA's broader efforts in African-language AI, notably through its ATLAS Umoja AI initiative, launched in July 2026. This program gathers expertise and language data from across Africa to develop AI services that are culturally and linguistically relevant. By mobilizing talent from networks like UNDP-supported University Innovation Pods (UniPods) and AI Labs, the partnership aims to accelerate the development, deployment, and scaling of impactful AI solutions throughout Africa, fostering inclusive digital and economic growth.
