Telkom SA Commits R100 Million to Boost AI Skills Across South Africa
South African telecommunications giant Telkom has pledged R100 million (approximately $6.1 million USD) towards establishing the Telkom AI Institute. This significant investment aims to enhance artificial intelligence and broader digital skills development specifically within South Africa, preparing its citizens for an economy increasingly shaped by advanced technologies. The initiative underscores a strategic shift beyond mere connectivity to empowering the populace with essential capabilities.
The announcement was made during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2026 in Geneva, as part of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Partner2Connect Digital Coalition. This coalition recently surpassed its US$100 billion fundraising target for global digital connectivity initiatives. Telkom's contribution joins pledges from other international organizations, highlighting a collaborative effort to bridge the global digital divide.
The proposed AI Institute will deliver practical training in AI and digital competencies, with a particular focus on empowering young people, small businesses, and historically underserved communities. Telkom Group CEO Serame Taukobong emphasized that providing connectivity alone is insufficient; true digital inclusion requires equipping individuals with the skills to leverage these connections effectively. He stated that the institute represents Telkom's commitment to translating network access into tangible skills, jobs, and opportunities for South Africans.
While specific operational details regarding the institute's timeline, curriculum partners, and physical locations are yet to be disclosed, the commitment will be monitored through the ITU's Partner2Connect platform. This investment reflects a growing recognition within South Africa that alongside expanding digital infrastructure, fostering a skilled workforce capable of engaging with AI technologies is crucial for economic growth and societal advancement. It positions South Africa to better harness the transformative potential of AI.
