South African Startup KhayaHR Leverages AI for Frontline Workforce Management

KhayaHR, a South African startup, has developed an AI-powered platform designed to connect frontline workers with employers, addressing the unique challenges of the informal and semi-formal employment sectors. Since its launch in May, the platform has already registered over 12,000 workers across various occupations and all nine South African provinces.
The core of KhayaHR's offering is a digital 'worker passport' that compiles verified identity, right-to-work status, skills, experience, and certifications, overcoming the limitations of traditional CVs for frontline staff. On the employer side, 'Khaya AI' interprets natural language job descriptions to conduct structured searches, helping businesses find suitable candidates efficiently. The platform also provides on-demand HR assistance for small businesses and households, guiding them through contracts, payroll, and other employment matters.
Beyond recruitment, KhayaHR includes an Academy offering mobile-friendly certificate courses, directly linking learning to employability by automatically adding completed certifications to worker profiles. This integrated approach aims to create a comprehensive workforce operating system that supports workers from skill development to employment management. The startup is currently self-funded and focused on reinvesting in product development and user acquisition to balance rapid worker adoption with employer demand, which is their primary commercial challenge.
